Synopsis
The first of Ann Bannon's cult lesbian pulp novel series, ODD GIRL OUT follows Laura Landon, a freshman student in a Midwestern college, as she finds herself powerfully attracted to one of her older sorority sisters, the attractive, sexually experienced Beth Cullison, who, despite her charms, finds something missing from her romantic life. One of the best-selling novels of 1957, ODD GIRL OUT broke from the tradition of most lesbian-themed pulps in its serious, emotionally complex depiction of women grappling with the personal and social ramifications of their sexuality. Though Bannon's first novel stuck to the convention of a dissatisfying ending to the lesbian affair, ODD GIRL OUT remains for many in the LGBT community to be a landmark work, a novel that, along with the rest of Bannon's "Beebo Brinker" books, allowed millions of isolated gay and lesbian readers to realize they were not alone.
