Album Notes Personnel: Erick Sermon, Joe Synystr, Keith Murray, Jeffrey Stewart, Debra Killings, Derrick Culbreath, Shadz Of Lingo, Michael J. Morgan "Soup". Producers: Erick Sermon, Brent Turner. Recorded at Rockin' Reel Studio, East Northport, New York; D.A.R.P. Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; Echo Sound Recording Studio, Los Angeles, California. A year after EPMD's messy first breakup, Erick Sermon lets his music do the talking. Handling duties behind the boards as well as on the mic, the Green Eyed Bandit comes correct with NO PRESSURE, debunking the widely-held theory that Parrish had always been the stronger talent in the duo. E stays in familiar production territory--utilizing samples from EPMD favorites like Zapp, James Brown, and Parliament--while working his trademark lisped rhyme flow to its fullest off-beat potential, speaking on safe sex, gold-diggin' females, and industry shadiness, while passing the mic to a stable of select protégées. Among the album's many highlights is "Hostile," which introduces a hungry young Keith Murray with an impressively bombastic verse-two tirade.
Industry Reviews 4 Stars - Slammin' - ...[NO PRESSURE] leaves no doubt that E-Double was always blessed with the essence of funk in his blood....Damn near every track is solid and consistent... The Source (11/01/1993)
Highly Recommended - ...It's clearly Sermon who can swing single....five years later and a crew of MCs come and gone, his poetry is still ahead of its time... Spin (11/01/1993)
...[NO PRESSURE's] not quite deja groove, though, because Sermon keeps a chip on his shoulder, and a layer of dissonance in the rhythm tracks that pushes the sound toward something harder and funkier... Musician (01/01/1994)
8 (out of 10) - ...An assured, confident debut that oozes energy from within a smoky cloud of chronic-induced relaxation... NME (01/29/1994)
...Lucky for us, it's flashiness that Sermon eschews [on NO PRESSURE], not humor... - Rating: A- Entertainment Weekly (10/15/1993)
