Album Notes Buffalo Daughter: SuGar Yoshinaga (guitars, sound effects, vocals); Yumiko Ohno (bass, Mini-Moog synthesizer, vocals); MoOog Yamamoto (DJ, vocals). Additional personnel: Aki (narration); Motoko Fujii (violin); Atsushi Matsushita, Chika Ogawa, Kin-Ichi Motegi (drums). Japanese version includes a bonus single CD featuring "Daisy" and "Jellyfish Blues." They're young, they're Japanese, they're on Grand Royal, they've got analog synths, one of them is named "Mooog" for God's sake, how much cooler could Buffalo Daughter possibly be? NEW ROCK is an apt title for what they create here, as they merge techno with thick, juicy '70s synth-funk melodies and a loopy sense of humor. These attributes, however attractive, might add up to naught were it not for the catchy pop choruses and sunny AM radio sensibility they bring to such tunes as "R&B (Rhythm and Basement) and "Great Five Lakes." With bizarre spoken word samples and ambient electronic effects adding sonic texture, NEW ROCK is a joyously chaotic piece of electronic pop inspiration.
Industry Reviews 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - ...Droning synthesizers play counterpoint to squawking seagulls, gurgling water and other found sounds; guitar distortion scrapes across hip-hop beats....it coheres like a sonic souffle: richly indulgent and filled with unexpected flavors... Rolling Stone (04/02/1998)
