Movie Description
A gritty, unabashed look at the realities of living with drug addiction, this wrenching drama centers around a group home for recovering addicts, and features a talented ensemble cast who are more than up to the challenges presented by the subject matter. As residents come and go, the old-timers keep to themselves, afraid of being dragged off the wagon or getting attached to someone who will inevitably leave. Brandon (Harry J. Lennix) and William (Thomas Jefferson Byrd) are the compassionate mangers of the house, whose attempts to cajole the men into providing a support structure for one another are met with refusal and apathy. But when tragedy strikes it serves as a wake-up call for many, and each character experiences a revelation that may or may not end in redemption. Avoiding the romanticization of drugs commonly found in Hollywood films, NEVER GET OUTTA THE BOAT runs the gamut of emotions experienced by addicts, from anger, fear, and grief, to compassion, hope, and joy; ultimately it presents a portrait that is subtle and extremely affecting.
