[This work] examines texts from ancient times to the present, crosses national and cultural boundaries, and analyzes both well- and little-known or studied philosophical and literary texts. It is supplemented by a selected bibliography, extensive notes, and two potentially useful appendices: a chronology of interracial literature and a chronology of prohibitions of interracial marriage and cohabitation. Although at times exhausting and confusing in its detail and sweep, it nevertheless will be a valuable resource for scholars in many fields concerned with racial relations, themes, and identities.

In what must be regarded as a major contribution to scholarship, [Sollors] locates and lists in a handy appendix nearly eight hundred . . . works [of 'interracial literature'], written in a dozen languages and published from antiquity to the present. . . . Sollors is at his best when his critique of the illogic of racial dividing lines is tempered by careful consideration of the structures of racial oppression. . . . He is considerably more insightful when examining late-nineteenth-century racial hierarchies than late-twentieth-century ones, and in either case, his focus on race is limited to black-white paradigms. . . .
