Industry Reviews YA-A photographic and written record of this century as portrayed in National Geographic. Chapters are arranged thematically by decade and open with a six-page essay discussing each era. A dozen highlights from the magazine itself inform today's readers what was interesting to subscribers at the time. However, most useful of all are the double-page spreads for each year presenting events, people, and themes in short paragraph entries. Brief trends and trivia are listed vertically. A time line appears along the bottom of the pages. Photographs bring the discussions to life and sidebars present interesting developments and people. An essay on the changing role of National Geographic concludes each chapter. This is not as comprehensive or detailed as Peter Jennings's The Century (Doubleday, 1998) but the concise entries should make it a handy resource for report writers or browsers.-Claudia Moore, W. T.
