Synopsis Carmen Laforet's semi-autobiographical novel, NADA, was first published in 1945 and quickly became a savage classic, a doleful portrait of a country gone mad with civil war, repression, suffering, and betrayal. Andrea, an orphan from the countryside, comes to Barcelona to live with her dead mother's family--a once-wealthy clan reduced to shambles by the war. Her aunts and uncles are neurotic and traumatized by their experiences; they fight, beat their wives, pray, and kill. Aunt Angustias, a fanatic puritan, takes it upon herself to reform Andrea from her willful ways ("If I'd gotten hold of you when you were younger, I'd have beaten you to death!"). Andrea, despite her poverty and hunger, seeks art, love, and comradeship among her wealthier schoolmates. But the oppression and squalor of the city constantly threatens to stunt her youth and her dreams. Finally translated into English in 2007, NADA is a vivid and exhilarating portrait of a Europe still stained by its hellish history.
