Two classic films from the height of William Powell's career are included here. Based on the novel by Eric Hatch, the 1936 screwball comedy MY MAN GODFREY is a genre favorite. On a scavenger hunt for a society ball, haughty Cornelia Bullock (Gail Patrick) discovers Godfrey (William Powell), a dirty, disheveled bum lurking around the city dump. She's looking for a "forgotten man" and Godfrey fits the bill perfectly. Hoping to win her first prize, she offers him five dollars to come along with her. Proud and dignified, he refuses, casting her aside. Minutes later, when her lovely younger sister Irene (Carole Lombard) makes the same request, an enamored Godfrey accepts. The hunt sets off an unusual chain of events that bring Godfrey into the Bullock household as a permanent fixture. He'll become deeply embroiled in their family saga before anyone learns his true identity.
Directed by Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA), 1947's LIFE WITH FATHER has been hailed as one of the best family films ever made, and resulted in plethora of awards, including an Oscar, for Powell. This delightful comedy, based on Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse's Broadway play, provides a look at family life in New York City during the 1880's. Irene Dunn, Edmund Gwenn, and a young Elizabeth Taylor costar.
