Relieved of the pressures of making good on his AMERICAN IDOL promise (as on his debut record), on MY KIND OF HOLIDAY Elliot Yamin is free to take it easy, delivering a relaxed, confident set of old-school soul. The fact that this is a holiday record is almost secondary, as Yamin in general wisely favors lesser-known Christmas songs over time-worn chestnuts. The Richmond, Virginia, native once again confirms his Donny Hathaway worship with a version of the soul legend's "This Christmas" and even the few standards ("The Christmas Song," "Jingle Bells") are framed by funky bare-bones production, which allows Yamin's sparkling vocals to shine their joyful light on the listener.
