As half of seminal hip-hop act EPMD, Erick Sermon earned his place as one of the most deft, dope rhyme-makers and beat-droppers the East Coast has known. The solo albums he's dropped every few years, while not as notable as his collaborations, have had their moments, but never totally lived up to his legacy. His third solo offering MUSIC comes awfully close to fulfilling Sermon's promise, with nimble rhymes, crafty beats and terrific guest turns from luminaries like Scarface and Redman.
E's never been the most pioneering artist in the hip-hop world, he just does it better than most other rappers out there. While sampling fallen legends has been done to death, he still manages to incorporate Marvin Gaye vocals on both the title track and "I'm Hot" without sounding tired or derivative. Sermon's songs are undeniably hard and unflinching as ever, never stronger than on an updating of MC Breed's "Ain't No Future in Yo Frontin" ("Ain't No Future...2001").

4 out of 5 - ...Be reassured that the man's lost none of the trademark funk thatgraced his classics with Parrish Smith as EPMD over a decade ago. It's sometimes a little cleaner now...but there's still plenty of grime for your dime...
