Movie Description
Following the conclusion of World War II a former concentration camp resident returns to Berlin to find her apartment occupied by a doctor. Refusing to give up her apartment, the woman moves in and develops a relationship with the man, who is obsessed with assassinating his former commanding officer. A classic film noir.

Cast:Hildegard Knef

Synopsis
This landmark German film examines an entire nation's attempts at atonement for the atrocities carried out prior to and during the Second World War.

Amid the rubble of Berlin a young doctor lives a tortured existence. He suffers from hallucinations due to the time he spent in a death camp, witnessing the mass exterminations committed by the Nazi regime. When he meets his former captain, who ordered these killings, and who has now settled down to raise a family, the doctor plans to kill him.

But then he wonders if this is the morally correct choice, after all.

Film Notes
This is the first German film produced after the Second World War, and it was made in the Russian zone of the country.

The Kino Video VHS version is mastered from a crisp new 35mm print which preserves the film's stunning visual impact.

Additional cast: Erna Sellner (Frau Bruckner); Arno Paulsen (Captain Bruckner); Robert Forsch (Herr Mondschein); and Albert Johann (Herr Timm).

Additional credit: Eugen Klagemann (cinematographer).

An Arikino release of a Defa production.
