Album Notes Disc 3 is a limited edition bonus disc which contains a discussion by Martin Pearlman of "Der Stein der Weisen" and its relationship to "Die Zauberflöte." It is not often that one gets to hear a world premiere recording of a Mozart composition, but here it is. The Mozart connection rediscovered in 1996, 'The Philosopher's Stone' is one of seven fairy-tale operas, commissioned along with 'The Magic Flute' for the Theater auf der Wieden. While Mozart was just one of several composers to work on this opera, 'The Philosopher's Stone' provides a unique perspective on Mozart's creative process. The music, similar to that of 'The Magic Flute,' is less stilted than most operas: it is written in the German vernacular and includes spoken dialogue between musical numbers. Performed on period instruments by the Boston Baroque, this recording brings to life a long forgotten gem. As enjoyable in its own right as it is for historical reasons, 'The Philosopher's Stone' has much to teach music lovers, young and old.
