Album Notes Early in his career, Smokey Robinson acted as a Motown staff producer and writer besides leading the Miracles and enjoying his own chart hits like "You Really Got A Hold On Me" and "Shop Around." So this Micro Werks compilation of Motown artists singing Smokey Robinson songs isn't the expected collection of cover versions. On the contrary, tracks like Mary Wells's "My Guy" and "You Beat Me To The Punch," the Marvelettes' "Don't Mess With Bill," Marvin Gayes "Aint That Peculiar," and the Temptations' "Since I Lost My Baby" are among the greatest, most representative Motown singles ever released. And for those who who think that Smokey was primarily a romanticist, the Contours hillariously mercenary "First I Look At the Purse" (later covered by the J. Geils Band) should set the record straight.
