Industry Reviews PreS-K Nursery rhymes and counting games are two great ways to entertain and educate preschoolers, but this collection of a dozen verses that feature numbers is an uneven attempt to package them together. The crowd of characters on the lively cover and the endpapers striped with cats, blackbirds, and apples that cry out to be counted will immediately engage young audiences. In addition to traditional Mother Goose selections, familiar contemporary rhymes such as "Five Little Monkeys" are included and provide welcome diversity. However, "She Sells Seashells" is a more dubious entry, as it has no number or counting element. Page layouts vary from a full double-page spread for shorter poetry to multiple pages divided into blocks for longer verses. The broad brush strokes and simple shapes are cheerful and energetic but it is sometimes hard to discern where one rhyme ends and the next begins. Lots of illustrations have objects to count but a few, disappointingly, do not. This eclectic mix of nursery poetry has more rhyme than reason, but will satisfy young listeners with its sprightly language and vibrant art. An attractive but not essential addition.
