Industry Reviews Gr 4-6 Storms have been associated with scary stories at least since lightning brought life to Frankenstein's monster, but these six tales make no pretense of emulating the literary skill or philosophical speculation of Mary Shelley's masterpiece. All take place during violent weather and range from science fiction to supernatural to campfire-style horror. Plot threads dangle like spider webs in the wind, but there are some clever angles. An ecology-minded alien turns the tables on a hunter of endangered animals; a chronically late girl is trapped in slow time by a magic watch. Some selections play with familiar horror conventions "Night Rider" gives a weird twist to the urban legend of the truck driver and the maniac in the back seat. Despite its gruesome cover, the book contains relatively little graphic gore and even offers some welcome touches of humor. As an alternative to the more lurid series, it could fill a need where there is high demand for horror fiction. Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL Lopate
