Album Notes Contains previously unreleased material from the 1966 Chess sessions for "The Real Folk Blues." Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar); Eddie Burns (guitar); Lafayette Leake (piano, organ); Fred Below (drums). Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 1966. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. One has only to hear that raw, surging electric guitar and intense, stirring voice to realize that one is in the dark and soulful world of John Lee Hooker. Like almost all of Hooker's outstanding Chess recordings, MORE REAL FOLK BLUES is an utterly satisfying shot of classic blues. While the back-up band on these cuts seems to encroach somewhat on the freedom and fluidity that Hooker usually achieves performing solo, the legendary bluesman compensates by intensifying his vocal delivery. "Mustang Sally And GTO" finds Hooker bursting out with growls and yelps, and "House Rent Blues," a Hooker favorite, receives one of its most compelling treatments. In all, this is an outstanding collection and a definitive statement of hardcore blues.
