Synopsis
As Billy Collins puts it in his foreword, Nobelist Wislawa Szymborska's poetry is "plain-spoken and mysterious at the same time." Beginning with the moving title poem (actually, "Monologue of a Dog Ensnared in History," a political allegory), this slender collection showcases Szymborska's appeal: her wit, her compassion, and her ability to surprise the reader with her observations because she is surprised herself.
