Synopsis A band of wild horses survives a shipwreck by managing to swim its way to Assateague, a desert island off the Virginia coast. Before too long, the horses and their progeny fully populate the island and roam upon it freely. Years later, the people of nearby Chincoteague Island begin holding an annual event in which some of the wild horses are captured and auctioned off to raise money for the local fire department. A young brother and sister duo, Paul and Maureen Beebe, are determined this year to capture, purchase, and tame the wildest horse of them all--the one known as "The Phantom." However, when Paul succeeds in capturing The Phantom, he is surprised to learn that she has a foal. Can Paul and Maureen raise enough money to buy both The Phantom and her foal? B&w illustrations accompany the text.
