Album Notes MISS PEGGY LEE is a 4-CD deluxe box set covering Peggy Lee's Capitol years from 1943 to 1972. It also includes an 80-page booklet featuring a major essay by Gene Lees, song-by-song annotations by Jim Pierson, rare photographs, and testimonials from the friends and peers of Peggy Lee. Personnel includes: Peggy Lee (vocals); Dave Barbour (conductor, guitar); Jack Marshall, Bill Holman, Quincy Jones, Benny Carter, Richard Hazard, Lou Levy, Dave Grusin, Bob Bain, Ralph Carmichael, Randy Newman, Pete Rugolo, Benny Goodman, Frank De Vol, Sid Feller, Billy May, Frank Sinatra, Joe Harnell, Nelson Riddle, Max Bennett, Billy Byers, Artie Butler (conductor); Mel Torme, Dean Martin (vocals); Toots Thielemans (harmonica); George Shearing Quintet; The Capitol Jazzmen; The Jud Conlon Singers; The Mellomen. Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg. MISS PEGGY LEE was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Boxed Recording Package. This brilliantly compiled box goes a long way towards rectifying a scandalous situation, namely the dearth of Peggy Lee Capitol recordings available on CD. Lee began with the Capitol label at its inception in 1944 and enjoyed a string of self-penned hits such as "I Don't Know Enough About You," "It's A Good Day" and "Manana," all co-written and accompanied by guitarist and combo leader Dave Barbour. After a five-year hiatus, Lee returned to Capitol in 1957 to record perhaps her greatest album, THE MAN I LOVE, conducted by none other than Frank Sinatra. The radio hits (and superior LPs) continued right on up to 1972, peaking with Lieber and Stoller's sardonic 1969 masterpiece "Is That All There Is?." Disc one comprises a kind of super tour of the singer's major hits. Disc two takes a look at Lee's early years in greater depth while the rest of the set offers a panorama of the late '50s and the '60s, in which Lee was rivaled only by Sinatra himself for her song artistry. In some ways she actually surpassed him, as her cool, bluesy style sounded contemporary even during the rock years.
