The limited-edition (first 70,000) U.S. pressing comes in a numbered, silver-embossed slipcase with a headshot of Hutchence by Herb Ritts, and a 16-page booklet. Quite tragically, Michael Hutchence became an alumnus of an ever-growing number of pop icons who are taken too soon, leaving fans only to wonder what could have been. Looking at any photo of the usually brooding Hutchence, it's apparent that he functioned at a higher level of mental acuity than those around him. There is no more fitting celebration of his life and music than his first and only solo album, MICHAEL HUTCHENCE. Tracks such as "Fear" and "Let Me Show You" tread on very similar ground as INXS. "Possibilities" is the first track on which Hutchence explores musical avenues of his own. The song is imbued with jazzy overtones and his trademark bluesy, intimate vocal delivery. "Get on the Inside" plays like a tribute to funk-inspired dance music, even borrowing a motif from Parliament's "Mothership Connection." While work on the project reached back as early as 1995, the sound is fresh, thanks to Andy Gill and Danny Saber, who carefully oversaw the production. MICHAEL HUTCHENCE is a tribute to the depth and reach of an artist who has sadly taken his place among the legends.
Industry Reviews 3.5 stars out of 5 - ...He set his arena-rock torch singing in a provocative landscape of melancholy-machine music....[Its] greatest strength is its bleak honesty...Hutchence sounds like he is stepping out of routine, not slipping into darkness... Rolling Stone (04/27/2000)
