Synopsis
This companion to THE GIVER and GATHERING BLUE focuses on Matty, a formerly wild young boy who has forged a new life for himself in the community known as Village. Now living with Kira's blind father, who is known as Seer, Matty is proud to live in Village, a place where strangers have always been welcomed, and where people treat each other with respect and kindness. Recently, though, something dark and evil has permeated Village: the people are becoming harsh and unforgiving and there is even a movement afoot to stop welcoming strangers into Village's society. Under the direction of Leader, Matty travels through Forest to deliver the news about Village--and to bring Kira to her father before she, an outsider, is permanently shut out of Village. As Matty makes the journey through Forest, he discovers that like Village, Forest is changing, and it too, seems bent on keeping strangers, and perhaps even Matty himself, away from Village forever. Matty, however, has recently discovered that he has a powerful and mysterious gift--but will he realize the true meaning and value of this gift in enough time to use it properly?

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "Matty was impatient to have the supper preparations over and done with. He wanted to cook, eat, and be gone."

Industry Reviews
"Lowry's writing, especially the domestic details and the dialogue, is simple and comfortable, while her story has enough mystery and action to carry the slower and more touching moments."
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Krista Hutley (06/01/2004)
