Continually engaged in self-reflection, he grapples with his competing loyalties and changing political sensibilities. Sergio believes in the revolution but relishes the privileged lifestyle of Europe's well-born literati. He feels a tremendous void in his life which he tries to fill by having an affair with a beautiful but poor young woman. Before long, Sergio's gotten himself in trouble with the girl's family. But she's merely symbolic of the mess he's made of his life.
