Who better than Jimmy McGriff to host a serious house party? On this session for Milestone, he invites some of his funky friends along-fellow organ legend Dr. Lonnie Smith, saxophonist Eric Alexander, guitarist Rodney Jones, and the ultra-funky Bernard "Pretty" Purdie are in the house to get busy. As one might expect, each cut is a deep-pocket groove that gets the toes tapping. McGriff is clearly the master of ceremonies, poking and prodding the tunes with his tasty B-3 licks and stealth-pedal basslines.
The organ duel gets downright sinister when Smith joins on such cuts as the bumping "Red Cadillac Boogaloo," a hefty groove from George Benson. Bluesy riffs like the opening "Neckbones a La Carte" and the bouncing title track fuel this PARTY, though, as McGriff and company cook up a spicy stew for the gathering. Jones contributes as much as the leader with his staccato riffs and fluid solos on such cuts as his "Grits, Gravy And Groove" and Easley's swinging "Blues For Stitt." The final McGriff/Smith combo on Smith's down-and-dirty "Dishing' the Dirt" is the ultimate cool-down for one of the hottest parties to ever celebrate the blues.
