Synopsis An 1889 novel of Sicilian life, a peasant named Gesualdo Motta works hard, saves his money, and makes clever business deals that enable him to buy land. He becomes wealthy and powerful, but because of his low birth he is unable to enter the social class he aspires to. When he finally marries into the aristocratic but corrupt family of the Traos, he becomes alienated from his own class as well. The novel celebrates peasant virtues at the expense of the decadence of high Italian society.
