Synopsis One of Trollope's shortest novels, MARION FAY tells the story of Lord Hampstead, who falls in love with the eponymous heroine, the Quaker daughter of a government clerk--and clearly below his station. Marion nobly refuses to marry him, however, because of her family tendency toward consumption, which killed her mother and siblings and which, sure enough, finally kills her, too. (Trollope's sister Emily died of consumption at 18.) This is not considered one of Trollope's better novels, but it is enlivened somewhat by various comic minor characters, including the Welsh Lord Lewddythlw, the alcoholic Lord Knockacoppul, and Lady Di Peacock.
