Album Notes
Created by Anthony Marshall and Danny Castro, Lyricist Lounge is an open-mic gathering of underground MCs at various stages throughout New York City. LYRICIST LOUNGE VOL. 1 is a collection filled with phat beats, underground rappers and wicked lyrics. The two-disc compilation is set in a make-shift lounge with De La Soul hosting the first disc and Kool Keith & Sir Menelik MCing the second.
Check out "Body Rock" featuring Q-Tip, Mos Def and Tash, and "C.I.A.," a hot collaboration between KRS-One and Zack De La Rocha from hard rockers Rage Against the Machine. Also checking in with hot tracks are Bahamadia & Rah Digga ("Be OK,") O.C. & Ras Kass ("Action Guaranteed") and Cipher Complete ("Bring Hip-Hop Back.") In keeping with the lounge/skit concept feel, there is a live recording of Black Thought, Common, Pharoahe Monch and Absolute from the notorious underground hip-hop radio show DJ Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito the Barber.

Industry Reviews
3.5 Mics (out of 5) - ...VOL. 1 does such a good job in recreating the experience of being at the Lounge....LOUNGE moves quickly, delivering a suprising number of gems and almost no duds...
The Source (06/01/1998)

...this compilation includes joints from both little-known heads and major-label artists....sharp metaphors and pinpoint punch lines...
Vibe (05/01/1998)

3 Stars (out of 5) - ...a double album spawned from the seven-year-old New York-based traveling venue at which unsigned artists express themselves....there's plenty of great unsigned talent here...
Rolling Stone (06/11/1998)
