Movie Description LOVERS OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE: Two children meet by chance and form a bond which carries them through all sorts of trials and coincidences. Only after becoming teens and step-siblings, do they profess their love for each other, embarking on an erotic odyssey that will take them to the ends of the Earth.
PASSION IN THE DESERT: Based on the controversial novella by Balzac, this is the story of a young army officer who becomes stranded in the Sahara desert. There, he begins to form a bond with a wild leopard. The leopard saves his life, and the two continue to connect, eventually consummating their relationship through a passionate romantic encounter. The sanity of this soldier becomes questionable, as does the link between man and beast, until he is confronted with the choice of which world to inhabit.
ESMERALDA: Victor Hugo's tragic gypsy, taken from his book THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, is brought to life in this ballet written by Cesare Pugni in 1844. Performed by the Mussorgsky State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater of St. Petersburg, this performance stars Elvira Khabibullina as the title character and is directed by Nikolai Boyarchikov. Great ballerinas Tatyana Vecheslova--who danced Esmeralda in the mid-20th century--and Matilda Kshesinskaya also offer their recollections of earlier incarnations of the ballet. An informative documentary introduction further situates the ballet historically and artistically.
