Synopsis
Cheryl Mendelson's novel is set vividly on New York's Upper West Side, where Peter Frankl is a lawyer stuck in a long-term marriage to Lesley, an extravagant, shallow, and supremely difficult woman he no longer loves. Middle-aged, and with two grown children, Peter finds himself unexpectedly released when Lesley is in a car crash that leaves her comatose. Despite the family's grief, they find themselves drawing together in a way they never have before, and in fact flourishing without her. Among other things, Peter feels free to devote less time to making money and more to working for a foundation that funds artists' projects. But he also must deal with a strong dose of guilt as he reaches out to new options in his life.
