Album Notes Personnel: Southside Johnny (vocals); Billy Rush (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Joel Gamolini (vocals, guitar); Richie "La Bamba" Rosenberg (vocals, trombone); Kevin Kavanaugh (vocals, piano, organ, synthesizer); Ed Manion (saxophone); Rick Grazda (trumpet); Steve Buslowe (bass); Steven Becker (drums, percussion); Larry Fast (programming); Patti Scialfa, Soozie Kirschner, Lisa Lowell (background vocals). Recorded at The House Of Music, West Orange, New Jersey. Although they came from two different musical worlds, a new Southside Johnny release was not unlike a new AC/DC album--you knew exactly what you were going to get, with no radical experiments. With synth pop and power ballads glutting the charts at the start of the '80s, the Asbury Jukes turned a deaf ear to current musical trends and issued another slice of soulful rock & roll, 1980's LOVE IS A SACRIFICE. As with their previous album, 1979's THE JUKES, the Bruce Springsteen/Steven Van Zandt compositions are dropped, and the group continues recording originals by Southside Johnny himself, and Asbury Jukes guitarist Billy Rush. As evidenced by such tracks as "Why Is Love Such a Sacrifice" and "Love When It's Strong," the duo were quite a songwriting team in their own right.
