Album Notes Personnel: Ryan Adams (vocals, guitar, piano); Greg Leisz, Johnny McNabb (guitar); Ruth Gottlieb (violin); Sarah Wilson (cello); Ian McLagen (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Joey McGinty (piano); Hutch Hutchinson, John Piscano (bass); Paul Garisto, Riky Fataar (drums); Julie Delgado, Debra Parson, Marianne Faithfull (background vocals). Recorded at Piety Street Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana; Cello Studios, Hollywood, Californa; Globe Studios, New York, New York. The year 2003 found Ryan Adams quite the busy boy, releasing a full-length album and two EPs almost simultaneously. Like its predecessor, the LOVE IS HELL PT. 2 EP is the quiet, contemplative antithesis of the brash, full-on attack of the ROCK N ROLL album. It continues Adams's seemingly temporary obsession with a Coldplay-meets-the-Smiths Britpop sound (co-produced by Smiths knob-twirler John Porter), full of gently chiming acoustic and electric guitars; soft, heartfelt vocals; and lilting, elegant melodies burnished by strings. Ironically, the most American/rootsy-sounding of these seven songs is a folkish romp titled "English Girls." Those who found Adams full of cockiness and arrogance in his previous stylistic guises will undoubtedly be surprised by the humble, low-key spirit of his musings here.
Industry Reviews 4 stars out of 5 - [I]t's Part 2's Blood On the Tracks-meets-Nilsson poignancy that lingers. Q (02/01/2004)
...[On PT. 2] he's a sad lounge crooner...a kiss-and-tell Dylan...and a skid-row Prince....It's impressive... - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (01/09/2004)
3.5 stars out of 5 - ...Adams is a craftsman, and on the image-rich PT. 2, he's taken lyrics he might have otherwise discarded and inflated them into pure romanctic reverie, surrounding the vocals with gentle, understated music... Rolling Stone (01/22/2004)
