Synopsis
Tian, the Lord of the Cranes, disguises himself as a beggar in a small Chinese village because he wants to find out if people remember to be kind and generous to others. Everyone ignores him except a nice innkeeper, who takes him in and gives him food and clothing. In return, Tian gives him the magical gift of three cranes that bring plenty of business to the inn. How can the innkeeper ever repay Tian? Tian has a suggestion of his own, and one that the innkeeper will always remember. With color illustrations throughout., To test the compassion of the people in the city, the lord of the cranes leaves his home high in the mountains and travels there disguised as a beggar, but only one man, the innkeeper, passes the test.
