Synopsis
LOOKING FOR LINCOLN by Philip B. Kunhardt, III and Peter W. Kunhardt examines the myth of Lincoln that started soon after the assassination and follows its development up to the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in 1922. The authors--from a family of Lincoln scholars--describe how Lincoln's legacy was formed from the grief following the Civil War, through Reconstruction, and afterwards, when the country ignored Jim Crow. They demonstrate the contribution of African-American struggles in the early years of the last century to Lincoln's significance. This history will accompany a PBS special prepared for 2009, the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth.
