Details

Synopsis An autobiographical play, written 13 years before O'Neill died but not produced during his lifetime. It concerns a theatrical family, alienated from the community around it. One of the sons is tubercular and goes to a sanatorium--as happened to O'Neill (and it was in the sanatorium that he determined to become a writer).

Industry Reviews "Essentially, 'Long Day's Journey Into Night' is not so much a tale as O'Neill's remorseless attempt to tell the blunt truth about his family as a matter of artistic conscience. The truth is ugly....But he analyzes the characters of the mother and father with a kind of austere understanding that ultimately spares them. Life has worn them down. The father has risen out of grinding poverty to a place in public life that he is incapable of mastering. Fear of returning to poverty poisons his instincts and judgment. And the mother's addiction to narcotics is a vice for which she is not responsible." New York Times Book Review - Brooks Atkinson (02/15/1956)
