Angelique Kidjo's musical formula, which joins traditional African melodies, themes and rhythms to a radio-ready club sensibility, has helped the Benin-born, Paris-based singer achieve remarkable international success. Kidjo's third album, LOGOZO, recorded in Miami and produced by Joe Galdo of the Miami Sound Machine, has some of the sunny, international sound of that Florida city, while recalling the marketable pop sheen of Galdo's group.
Streamlined African dance rhythms are the forte here, as on the album's opener, "Batonga," and the pulse-quickening "Ewa Ka Djo." Kidjo also returns to her roots on the chant-driven "Senie" and the moving acoustic ballad "Malaika," but she is not afraid to update the tradition, as on the hip-hop influenced "We-We." Celebrity guests Branford Marsalis and Manu Dibango lend stellar support to this cross-genre, dance-soul affair.
