Recorded at Room & Board, Nashville, Tennessee. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. On this, the debut of Jack Ingram and the Beat Up Ford Band, the name of this country rebel's backing ensemble tells it all (assuming he bears no hostility to former president Gerry). Like a rickety-but-reliable old pickup truck, Ingram's music bulldozes its way through the polite, overproduced neo-country scene, stopping just long enough to flip Vince Gill the bird. The specter of co-producer Steve Earle looms over LIVIN' OR DYIN', most obviously in Ingram's rough-and-tumble vocal style, but also in his empathetic-yet-unsentimental portraits of life at the bottom of the Clinton America food chain. Ingram's country renegade roots become even clearer when he covers Texas troublemakers Guy Clark ("Rita Ballou") and Jimmie Dale Gilmore ("Dallas").
Industry Reviews ...an impressive clutch of raw-boned, Texas-style songs....more than a healthy reverence from coproducer Steve Earle, who stamped his sound over much of the record. In an age when soft rock passes for real country, Ingram is the s---kicker's revenge. Entertainment Weekly (04/18/1997)
