Album Notes Our Lady Peace: Raine Maida (vocals); Steve Mazur (guitar); Duncan Coutts (bass); Jeremy Taggart (drums). Additional personnel: Michael Eisenstein. Recorded live in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Montreal, Quebec. Despite having mid-level success in the United States, Our Lady Peace are huge in their home country of Canada, and one listen to their first in-concert album LIVE makes it a lot clearer why Canucks are so crazy over this alt-rock quartet. Characterized by a post-grunge sound and an emotive singer in Raine Maida, who manages to avoid sounding like some Scott Stapp retread, OLP manages a nice fusion of swirling guitar and rumbling rhythms infused with an innate sense of melodicism. Live, these strengths come to the fore even more and are best demonstrated in songs ranging from the Stone Temple Pilots-like insistence of "One Man Army" to the Oasis-meets-Live stomp of "Superman's Dead." Casual fans also get their bell rung by the inclusion of American semi-hits like the ethereal "Naveed/Life" and hyper-catchy "Starseed." As for diehard OLP devotees, plenty of them made their presence known on this recording, enthusiastically forming a de facto chorus on faves like the anthemic "Innocent" and equally stirring "Is Anybody Home." LIVE is none too shabby a showing by a band that continues to fly under the American mainstream radar.
