Band #2 recorded from December 3-5, 1993. Band #3 recorded from December 2-4, 1994. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch. To truly capture the spirit of jazz, one must experience the music live as it happens. To this end, Wynton Marsalis has assembled a stunning collection of performances by three versions of his working septet at the famous Village Vanguard between 1991 and 1994. In this legendary underground temple of jazz, the music is free to become whatever it chooses. Under Marsalis's guidance his art comes alive in this setting, free from the constraints of more formal recording or performing restrictions. This is certainly the best forum for the music to communicate with the audience, and each of Marsalis' groups rises to the occasion and delivers excellent performances that sustain throughout the seven discs of this set. For the listener, this amounts to sitting right down front--minus the steep cover charge and minimum, of course--for a lifetime of truly connected experiences of an art that was captured in its prime. Aside from being present at the original occurrence, there is no other way to get closer to the heart of the music.
Industry Reviews ...Sheer, unadulterated swinging [with] lots of group interaction....harks back to the vibrant energy and spirit of abandon apparent on Marsalis' excellent quintet outings of the '80s... JazzTimes (04/01/2000)
...illustrates Marsalis' considerable stylistic breadth and acumen on trumpet in a concise and evocative context....a friendly, epic sprawl... - Rating: A Entertainment Weekly (12/17/1999)
