Recorded at Loud Studios, Soundstage & Soundshop Studios and Sound Emporium, Nashville, Tennessee; Westlake Studios, Los Angeles, California. For her third and final album of the '90s--after having made three albums in the late '70s--Carlene Carter messes with the standards which had made the previous two, I FELL IN LOVE and LITTLE LOVE LETTERS, so powerful, and yet somehow comes up with an album which trumps them both. Producing herself for the first time, Carter tones down the rock vibe that Heartbreakers bassist Howie Epstein had given LITTLE LOVE LETTERS, combining pure country heart with pop smarts in a style not at all unlike her ex-husband Nick Lowe's best albums. Former NRBQ guitarist Big Al Anderson is Carter's creative foil here, playing rangy guitar throughout and co-writing several of the best songs, especially the burning "Hurricane." The highlights, though, are the aching cover of great-uncle A.P. Carter's "The Winding Stream" and the saucy "Loose Talk," a sweet duet with Carter's dad, '50s rockabilly star Carl Smith.
