Movie Description With hard times in the family and hard knocks on the job, it's their hard rock band at night that keeps Joe (Michael J. Fox) and his sister, Patti (played by real-life rock star Joan Jett), alive. In LIGHT OF DAY, Joe and Patti are Ohio siblings who are part of a local rock band, the Barbusters. At home they are part of a dysfunctional family, the Rasnicks. Particularly troubled is Patti's antagonistic relationship with her Bible-toting mother, Jeanette (Gena Rowlands in a remarkable performance), who is angered and ashamed that Patti is an unwed single mother who refuses to reveal the identity of her son's father. When their mother falls ill, Patti and Joe's lives are put into a tailspin, and they must confront the conflicts that will prevent them from living their lives and their dreams. Rowlands shines in her portrayal of the complex, stricken, repressed Jeanette in this family-and-showbiz drama.
Synopsis Paul Schrader wrote and directed this rock & roll family drama that stars Joan Jett, Michael J. Fox, and Gena Rowlands, with a title song written by Bruce Springsteen.
Film Notes Bruce Springsteen wrote the title song for the film. He owed the song to director Paul Schrader because Bruce borrowed the original title of the film, BORN IN THE U.S.A., for a song of his own. Bruce made "Light of Day" a cornerstone of his live show in the 1990s and on into 2000.
Joan Jett, who plays Patti, is not a professional actress in real life but an accomplished rock musician. However, in 2000-2001, she played Columbia in the Broadway revival of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW.
Industry Reviews "...[The] reconciliation between Jett and Rowlands is an exquisitely written and extremely moving scene..." Variety - Jagr. (02/04/1987)
"...LIGHT OF DAY is a sympathetic, intelligent movie, with one great performance....Joan Jett is a gutsy presence..." Los Angeles Times - Michael Wilmington (02/06/1987)
"Exposing the mundane flipside of rock 'n' roll glamour, LIGHT OF DAY shows the disappointments and tensions of being in a band doomed to elude success." Sight and Sound - Sight and Sound Critic (08/01/2005)
Quotations "I got a little lost along the way, but I'm just around the corner to the light of day."--from Bruce Springsteen's title song, sung by Joan Jett
