Synopsis Written using alternate points of view, THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS tells the story of Genly Ai, an ethnologist who arrives at the planet Gethen. There he encounters not only sub-zero temperatures, but an androgynous humanoid species whose ways perplex and intrigue him. Though not dependent on the earlier books, this is the fourth book in the Hainish series. It won both the Hugo and Nebula awards in 1969, and, in 1995, was the recipient of the James Tiptree, Jr. Retrospective Award.

Industry Reviews "I'm merely observing, in the peculiar, devious and thought-experimental manner proper to science fiction, that if you look at us at certain odd times of day in certain weathers, we already are [androgynous]." Introduction - Ursula K. Le Guin
"Le Guine's greatest accomplishment, certainly reflecting the finest balance of her powers, is 'The Left Hand of Darkness,' though I hasten to name this her finest work TO DATE." Reference Books - Harold Bloom
"Along about 1967, I began to feel a certain unease....I wanted to define and understand the meaning of sexuality and the meaning of gender, in my life and in our society. Much had gathered in the unconscious--both personal and collective--which must either be brought up into consciousness or else turn destructive. It was that same need...that had led Beauvoir to write 'The Second Sex', and Friedan to write 'The Feminist Mystique', and that was, at the same time, leading Kate Millet and others to write their books, and to create the new feminism. But I was not a theoretician, a political thinker or activist, or a sociologist. I was and am a fiction writer. The way I did my thinking was to write a novel. That novel, 'The Left Hand of Darkness', is the record of my consciousness, the process of my thinking." Ursula K. Le Guin
