Synopsis
Oriana Cochran takes refuge in the dry country east of San Francisco in the early years of the 20th century, where she raises her illegitimate daughter and becomes a homesteader. When she falls for a French cowboy drifter, her daughter concentrates alternately on becoming her mother's rival and on trying to turn herself into her new stepfather--literally attempting to become a man.
