Synopsis The 19th-century novel THE RISE OF SILAS LAPHAM inspired this satire set in contemporary Long Island. Harry March is a cranky, misanthropic writer who lives with his talking, born-again West Highland terrier, Hector, on a tiny island off the coast of Quogue. When the construction of a new, absurdly ostentatious mansion for recent Hamptons transplant Silas Lapham brutally interrupts Harry's peaceful existence, Harry determines to get rid of Lapham and his appalling new residence, no matter what the cost.

"[A] wicked sendup of class relations of Long Island's East End....This satisfying old-school stab at the Hampton's debasement will have New Yorker readers laughing out loud, even as it sends them up, too." (starred review) (10/31/2005)
"Great stuff." (12/01/2005)
