Synopsis
Samuel Beckett examines the futility of mixing memory with aspiration in his remarkable one-act play KRAPP'S LAST TAPE, as a 69-year-old man named Krapp performs his annual ritual of making a tape recording on his birthday to commemorate the previous year. Much of the play consists of a recording made 30 years earlier which Krapp listens to, wherein he recalls his mother's death, a romantic encounter with a young woman, and a moment of epiphany he experienced while looking off the end of a pier. The current Krapp has little to offer in the way of notable memories from his most recent year, choosing instead to continually rewind and replay the earlier tape, even as he mocks the appalling ignorance of his 39-year-old self, who in turn chastises an enthusiastic twenty-something Krapp from an even earlier tape. Thus, as Krapp ages, memory eclipses hope, and he surrenders to the use of darkness as his only source for enlightenment. This collection also contains a pair of Beckett's radio plays, ALL THAT FALL and EMBERS, and two pantomimes which carry Beckett's signature abstraction to its logical conclusion of silent, seemingly aimless gestures.
