Album Notes Personnel: Paul Oscher (vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass harmonica, piano); Steve Guyger (harmonica); Dave Maxwell (keyboards); Mudcat Ward (acoustic & electric bass); Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums). Recorded at Showplace Studios, Dover, New Jersey, between December 18 & 20, 1995. Includes liner notes by Dave Peverett. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Oscher first came to the attention of blues fans as a harmonica player for Muddy Waters in the late '60s and early '70s. Subsequently he spent some time playing with Louisiana Red and with the posthumous tribute band made up of Muddy Waters alumni. For a bluesman of his talents, it's shocking that Oscher didn't make his recorded debut as a leader until 1996. Though he grew up in Brooklyn, Oscher soaked up every nuance of the classic '50s Chicago style, and it's that gritty, unadorned sound that reigns on this album. In addition to being a first-class blues harp player in the grand Little Walter style, Oscher is a distinctive, expressive singer with a soulful, understated delivery. It's also good news for the blues that he writes effective original material in the classic blues vein, rather than reprising the Chess catalogue. Throughout this album, there's a dark, ominous quality to Oschers raw, rough-and-tumble blues, one that rings of depth and authenticity.
