Album Notes This two-disc set made available through Canada's Madacy label offers a hefty sampling of the material that Bob Marley and his Wailer cohorts recorded for production wizard Lee "Scratch" Perry in the late '60s in Jamaica. Cuts like "Memphis" feature Marley's unmistakable vocal delivery over haunting background vocals that alternately swell and ebb in volume. "Mr. Brown" is a production escapade that opens with ghoulish growls, fuzzed-out analog synth, and high-pitched, ghostlike sheets of vocals. "How Many Times" is a beautiful ballad that seems startlingly fresh, though it calls upon familiar lyrical tropes. The sound quality here is by turns invitingly warm and scratchy and downright sludgy, but these discs provide insight into the formative period of one of the most important musical collectives of the 20th century.
