Synopsis The introduction of a popular new technology, called imprinting, that allows people to make ephemeral clay copies--"dittos"--of themselves, leads to all kinds of new crimes. Private investigator Albert Morris traffics in the dark realm of ditto infringement, rooting out criminal copiers. When a legitimate imprinting research scientist is murdered, Morris goes on the case--shunting him ever further into the sinister world of the ditto black market.

Industry Reviews "Intricate plotting, unflagging inventiveness, and a judicious sprinkling of puns and in-jokes: Brin keeps the pages feverishly turning and the tone light enough to evade the inherent irrationality of the premise." Kirkus Reviews (11/15/2001)
