This budget-priced twofer collects the first two albums of the country singer-songwriter Clint Black, whose clever wordplay and smart twists on old themes epitomized what was known in the late 1980s and early '90s as "new country." Black's world-weary tone on songs such as KILLIN' TIME's "Live & Learn" and the brilliant "Nothing's News" are completely convincing, while PUT YOURSELF IN MY SHOES' "Where Are You Now" and "A Heart Like Mine," which both feature complex, gorgeous melodies, cut closer to the bone emotionally than Black's earlier work.
