Album Notes Personnel includes: Edward Ka-Spel, Stret Majest Alarme, Silverman. More famously known as the pixie-eyed, loopy frontman for his band the Legendary Pink Dots, Edward Ka-Spel on his own tends to go even further out on stylistic limbs, embracing post-industrial rock, experimentalism, and stream-of-consciousness psychedelic folk ragas. This entry in his CHINA DOLL series is a similarly mind-altering adventure into Ka-Spel's febrile imagination, where his typically warbling vocals spin Grimm-inflected nursery tale rhymes amidst a kaleidoscope of obtuse electronics, guitars, and various sundry noisemakers. Most of the tracks are unburdened by straight-ahead rhythmic contours; rather, Ka-Spel and company weave their psychotropic yarns into semi-melodic bitstreams adrift in spooky, even sinister soundscapes. It's arresting stuff, but engaging, too, and proof that solo Ka-Spel remains a force to be reckoned with.
