Recorded at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York from August 26-September 12, 1999. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Over the course of a dozen years Karen Mantler has examined her own life in song by looking at her cat, or the absence of her cat. She has managed to make this personal quandary a subject for public consumption, and she has done so with quiet grace, wry humor, and subtle invention. This one subject has become an entry point into all manner issues. Love, loss, longing, fears, frustrations, and fun are all to be found in her songs. While it utilizes some jazz players, Mantler's music does not fall squarely into the world of jazz. Rather, it mixes jazz elements with cabaret, Tin Pan Alley, bossa nova, and more. The mood throughout is not unlike that created on many works by her mother, the composer Carla Bley.
