Synopsis The more beautiful African animals mercilessly tease the ugly little warthog Ngiri about his unsavory appearance; the striped zebra and the spotted leopard gleefully gloat over the good fortune to look so splendid. The wildebeest decides to remedy the situation by furnishing Ngiri with magic drums that will grant his wishes, although "not always as you expect!" Ngiri bangs his drums, and the animals' most striking features are magically transferred to the other warthogs (except Ngiri). The spots, the stripes, the elephant's trunk, and the rhino's horn disappear from their original owners and turn up on the ecstatic warthogs, who preen and parade around in delight. When the jungle threatens to erupt into a war zone, Ngiri plays his drums again, but the features are restored to the wrong animals, who all gape and gawk in astonishment at each other in these bizarre new incarnations. The lush, lavish paintings of the gorgeous animals in the blazingly colorful tropical jungle contain hidden surprises for the readers to seek out., Tired of being teased, Ngiri, the smallest warthog in Africa, uses a set of magic drums to make wishes, but he is not careful enough and makes the rift between the Warthogs and the beautiful Other Beasts even worse.

Industry Reviews "Not the strongest plot around, but, along with the pleasures of poring over accomplished, sometimes beautiful art for cleverly hidden details, children will be drawn by the silly switcheroos and comical expressions of dismay among the animal cast." (09/01/2004)
